I. FIRE AND OTHER EMERGENCIES:
- REMAIN CALM.
- Alert others and activate the building fire alarm. When safe to do
so, DIAL 911. Identify the fire location and give any
other information you have about the source of the fire and any other
hazards in the area.
- Use extinguishers for MINOR fires only. If the
fire cannot be controlled, close all doors to confine the fire if it
is safe to do so and leave the area.
- When you hear theEmergency Alarm evacuate the building immediately and go to the designated evacuation site. Re-enter only when told to do so by a Police Officer or disaster official.
II. EARTHQUAKE:
- KEEP CALM. Don't run or panic. If you take the proper
precautions you will decrease your chances of being injured.
- STAY WHERE YOU ARE. Most injuries occur as people
are entering or leaving buildings.
- If the Earthquake strikes when you are indoors, take cover under a desk, heavy table, or against inside walls or doorways. Stay away from glass windows and overhead light fixtures. If you are in a laboratory, stay away from hazardous materials.
- Do not use matches or other open flames either during or after the tremor. Turn off all bunsen burners and other ignition sources.
- If the Earthquake catches you outside, move away from buildings and utility wires. Move to an open area. Stay there until the
shaking stops.
AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE
- CHECK FOR INJURIES. Do not attempt to move persons who
may be seriously injured unless they are in danger of further injury.
- IF YOU DETECT A GAS LEAK, CALL 9-1-1. Also notify the building
disaster coordinator so that an evacuation may be conducted.
- EVACUATION OF BUILDINGS IS NOT AUTOMATIC. Evacuation will
depend on surrounding circumstances i.e. gas leak, fire or severe structural
damage. Building evacuations should be conducted at the direction of public
safety personnel or the building disaster coordinator.
- If buildings are evacuated, stay out of them until directed to re-enter by either a Police Officer or disaster official.
- If evacuation of buildings is necessary, be prepared to assist handicapped persons.
- Report any trapped or injured persons to disaster officials.
III. SHELTER IN PLACE GUIDELINES:
Sheltering in Place is a protective action taken inside a building to protect the building occupants from external hazards, minimize the chance of injury and/or provide the time necessary to allow for a safe evacuation. Circumstances that may warrant a shelter-in-place activity could include:
| Sever Weather | Biological incident | Active Shooter |
| Civil unrest | Radiological incident | Accidental chemical exposure |
Practice general safety precautions at all times. If you observe any suspicious activity on campus, immediately contact University Police at 9-1-1 or (909) 869-3070.
The notice to Shelter-In-Place will be issued by emergency personnel from University Police or the Emergency Operations Center and can be received in many ways. Building emergency personnel may receive notice to Shelter-In-Place or notice may be sent using our campus wide Safety Alert.
In the event of an active shooter,
- If you can leave the area safely, do so
- Notify anyone you encounter as you are leaving that they must exit immediately as well
- Do not signal the building occupants by activating a fire alarm
- Take shelter in another university building if possible
- Contact University Police to advise them of what is happening
If you cannot leave the area,
- Close and lock the door
- Move furniture to barricade the door if possible
- Turn off the lights. Block any windows that provide a view of the room to the outside
- Stay away from the windows and doors if at all possible
- Seek protective cover of some kind under or behind furniture
- Take a moment to switch all cell phones in the room to vibrate mode so that they will not alert anyone
to your presence
- Do not answer the door under any circumstance
- Do not leave the room until directed to do so by emergency personnel
- Work to remain calm and develop a plan to escape should it become necessary
- If police enter the room, follow their instructions
For severe weather and civil unrest that pose a physical threat,
- Stay inside and move away from windows to the inner corridors
- Be sure to close all doors connecting exterior offices to the corridor
- For extreme weather, relocate to lower levels in the building
For external chemical, biological or radiological incident,
- Stay inside and move to an inner corridor or office
- Close windows and turn off air conditioners and fans
- Move to higher levels of the building if possible to reduce the transfer of contaminated air from outside to
inside
- Move higher in the building since many chemical agents are heavier than air and tend to hug the ground
IV. DESIGNATED EVACUATION SITES (Fire,
Earthquake, and All Other Emergency Evacuations):
-
The Building 4 evacuation site is between the rain forest greenhouse and Building 4 on the grassy area (west side of Building 4).
-
The Buildings 3 & 8 evacuation site is on the grassy area in front of the Dean’s office and away from the building (east side of Building 8).
DO NOT USE ELEVATORS.
