Mission Statement

In keeping with the polytechnic spirit of the University, the College of Science is dedicated to:

  • Providing an academically stimulating environment that prepares undergraduate and graduate students for life, leadership and careers in a rapidly changing technological and multicultural world;
  • Providing students with the skills and knowledge necessary to collect, evaluate and apply information to solve complex problems through a modern and evolving curriculum that emphasizes a hands-on, learn-by-doing approach;
  • Advancing scientific knowledge and maintaining a dynamic, creative and professionally active faculty of teacher-scholars and a competent staff to support faculty and students; and
  • Serving the university and reaching beyond the bounds of the campus in an effort to meet the needs of the local and global communities.

GOAL 1:

ENHANCE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Objective 1 - Enhance student retention and graduation rate without sacrificing quality.

Action 1 - Explore establishing a college-wide advising office to collaborate with departments with regard to GE., university-wide curriculum matters, and matters related to student academic difficulty.

Action 2 - Institute training workshops to facilitate student advising.

Action 3 - Develop a college-wide two-year schedule of course offerings sensitive to student's needs.

Action 4 - Establish departmental peer mentoring programs for students.

Action 5 - Develop a 1-unit college-wide student orientation course in scientific communication.

Objective 2 - Periodically assess student achievement, and alumni and employer satisfaction and respond accordingly.

Objective 3 - Support department activities in developing effective "learning outcomes assessment" measures.

Objective 4 - Recognize excellence in student scholarship and service.

Action 1 - Institute annual college-wide recognition reception.

Action 2 - Award student recognition certificates/plaques.

Action 3 - Seek ways to increase student scholarship awards.

GOAL 2:

ADVANCE TEACHING EXCELLENCE AND INNOVATION

Objective 1 - Provide classroom and laboratory facilities that are conducive to effective teaching and learning.

Action 1 - Assess status of college teaching and learning facilities.

Action 2 - Develop a systematic plan to upgrade and maintain classrooms and laboratories throughout the college.

Objective 2 - Support efforts to improve teaching excellence.

Action 1 - Encourage use of alternative teaching/learning methods, including computer-aided instruction.

Action 2 - Improve lecture and lab coordination where appropriate.

Action 3 - Encourage teaching strategies that enhance student participation and involvement.

Action 4 - Encourage faculty to experiment with innovative methods of presentation.

Action 5 - Institute workshops on innovative teaching and learning methods.

Action 6 - Encourage team teaching where appropriate.

Objective 3 - Keep curriculum flexible and up-to-date.

Action 1 - Explore interdisciplinary course development opportunities.

Action 2 - Encourage an on-going curriculum review and revision process.

Objective 4 - Support department activities in developing effective methods for assessment of teaching.

Objective 5 - Institute faculty and staff awards for advancing teaching excellence and innovation.

GOAL 3:

EXPAND OPPORTUNITIES AND INCENTIVES FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR FACULTY AND STAFF

Objective 1 - The College will seek to provide adequate funding for professional development.

Objective 2 - Develop more flexible mechanisms for supporting staff professional development.

Action 1 - Seek to increase funds for staff development.

Action 2 - Encourage Fee Waivers for staff.

Action 3 - Improve coordination within and between departments to cover duties when staff participate in development activities.

Objective 3 - Expand and encourage faculty and staff professional
mentoring within the College.

Objective 4 - Expand workshop opportunities
and colloquia both in-house and externally.

Action 1 - Expand department workshops and colloquia.

Action 2 - Develop joint workshops in the area of science.

GOAL 4:

ENHANCE RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

Directed by the Dean through the College Office of Development:

Objective 1 - Identify infrastructure needs in Bldg. 3, 8 & the new biotechnology building.

Action 1 - Establish an ongoing process to identify needs.

Action 2 - Establish college priorities.

Action 3 - Seek to meet prioritized needs.

Objective 2 - Engage alumni in resource development activities.

Action 1 - Develop and maintain centralized college alumni database.

Action 2 - Publish college or departmental newsletters.

Action 3 - Develop and conduct alumni survey.

Action 4 - Expand alumni activity.

Objective 3 - Build relationships with private industry and foundations.

Action 1 - Develop and maintain databases.

Action 2 - Develop partnerships with industry and foundations to include co-op education, internships, sponsored projects, curriculum development, and contract education.

Action 3 - Solicit funding, equipment, and other resources to match prioritized departmental needs.

Objective 4 - Build connections with and increase applications to granting agencies.

Action 1 - Develop and maintain database.

Action 2 - Encourage and assist faculty and staff in grant writing.

Objective 5 - Explore other development opportunities, including planned giving, annual funds, etc.

Objective 6 - Involve faculty and staff in development.

Action 1 - Institute workshops on techniques in resource development.

Action 2 - Assist departments and individuals in producing resource development plans.

Action 3 - Publish bulletins on the progress of development activities.

Action 4 - Create a faculty/staff incentive program for development activities.

Action 5 - Assist faculty and staff in resource development efforts, including grant writing.

GOAL 5:

PROMOTE RESOURCE PLANNING

Objective 1 - Increase sharing resources (faculty, staff, and equipment)
within the College.

Action 1 - Form faculty and staff task force that will identify resources that can be shared to increase efficiency.

Objective 2 - Meet FTES targets.

Action 1 - Identify ways to increase flexibility in meeting FTES targets without compromising goals of the College Strategic Plan.

Objective 3 - Establish a collaborative mechanism for allocating
faculty and staff positions within the College.

Action 1 - New and vacant faculty and staff positions will be allocated based on priorities established by the Strategic Plan and the Department Chairs Council.

Objective 4 - Develop a timely, transparent and collaborative budget
process for the College.

Action 1 - Establish a two-year funding cycle.

Objective 5 - Develop a comprehensive plan for providing,
maintaining and renewing equipment to enhance teaching and learn.

GOAL 6:

PROMOTE COLLEGE OUTREACH

Objective 1 - Develop a student recruitment plan.

Action 1 - Establish a college advising board composed of department representatives as well as representatives from feeder high schools and community colleges.

Action 2 - Encourage development of departmental plans to follow up on student applications.

Objective 2 - Increase applicant show-rate and improve the number and quality of students applying to college programs.

Action 1 - Work with Admissions and Evaluations to ensure that applications are processed efficiently.

Objective 3 - Supported by the College Development Office, design and publish new department brochures.

Objective 4 - Increase college involvement in the surrounding community.

Objective 5 - Increase community involvement in college activities.
